Call on the Obama Administration to Sign the Rome Statute

The Interational Criminal Court (ICC) began its first trial against accused war criminal Thomas Lubanga Dyilo of the DRC in January.  The Court is also expected to release a formal arrest warrant for Sudanese President al-Bashir, accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity, marking the first time an acting head of state has ever been indicted by the Court.

The 108 nations that have ratified the Rome Statute are obligated to hand  Bashir over if he flees to their countries. He cannot run and he cannot hide. This simple statement symbolizes a total paradigm shift in the world - heads of state can no longer commit atrocious crimes and get away with it while brandishing the shield of national sovereignty; world leaders will have to face the scales of justice from now on. They will be held accountable for their actions, and not by violent military invasions, but through the systematic policies of an international institution of law.  The ICC provides an important way to ensure international justice and punishment for war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide.
Unfortunately, the U.S.  does not participate in the ICC.  Although President Clinton signed the Rome Statute, President Bush "unsigned" it 2002.
The U.S. should be a full partner in the quest for international justice and human rights.  Click here to email President Obama.  Just write "Please sign the Rome Statute."

This opinion piece calls attention to the growing instability in Pakistan and the need for the U.S. and the international community to recognize the global implications.  A growing Taliban insurgency, coupled with a weak central government and economic crisis, provide a breeding ground for terrorism, extremism, and a lack of nuclear security.
